The Life Turtlenest Project, co-financed by the European Union through the LIFE program, aims to enhance the conservation of the Mediterranean loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) by monitoring and securing nesting sites. Additionally, the project seeks to assess the impact of climate change on the species' nesting behavior.
Objectives:
- Identify and safeguard loggerhead turtle nests.
- Involve local authorities, beach operators, and citizens in monitoring and protecting turtle nests.
- Raise public awareness about loggerhead turtle nesting on Mediterranean beaches.
- Improve scientific knowledge to support the species’ protection using innovative monitoring techniques.
- Enhance the effectiveness of Natura 2000 marine sites for turtle conservation.
The Life Turtlenest Project is dedicated to conserving and protecting the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) from anthropogenic threats at nesting sites in the western Mediterranean. It also aims to evaluate the effects of climate change on turtle nesting. Through a multidisciplinary approach and the establishment of an international network, the project utilizes shared best practices and a monitoring and control system to conserve new nesting sites under current and future climate scenarios.
