European Mobility Week 2024: Sharing Public Spaces

The theme for European Mobility Week 2024 is "Sharing Public Spaces".
European Mobility Week, organized by the European Commission, is the leading awareness campaign for sustainable urban mobility. It encourages behavioral changes toward active mobility, public transport, and other clean, smart transportation solutions. The main event takes place from September 16 to 22 annually, culminating in Car-Free Day. Local authorities are encouraged to use this week to test innovative planning measures, promote new infrastructure and technologies, measure air quality, and gather public feedback.
The Ministry of Environment and Energy Security supports the event, aiming to make Italy one of the top participating countries in Europe. This year’s theme focuses on:

  1. Experiencing public spaces differently
  2. Co-designing urban spaces
  3. Creating safe routes for active travel
  4. Planning safer streets

The theme "Sharing Public Spaces" aligns with the goals of improving urban life quality, integrating EU initiatives like REPowerEU and the Green Deal, and promoting less polluting transportation options. With transportation being the second largest source of pollution in Europe, significant efforts are needed to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The REPowerEU plan addresses challenges like COVID-19 and energy security issues from the Ukraine crisis by promoting energy efficiency, diversifying energy sources, and accelerating the transition to clean energy. Public administrations play a crucial role in implementing policies and infrastructure changes for sustainable mobility.
