The European Union project "Med Pearls" created by the Italian non-profit association Mediterranean Pearls, concluded on 31 June 2023. Launched in October 2019 in Barcelona, the project aimed to position the Mediterranean as a unique and integrated slow tourism destination. This initiative sought to promote sustainable travel and deeper connections with local communities, challenging the region's mass tourism model.
Med Pearls spanned six countries: Egypt, Greece, Italy, Jordan, Palestine, and Spain, developing slow tourism experiences in 13 pilot areas. These efforts revealed hidden treasures and authentic cultures, transforming how travelers engage with the Mediterranean.
The project defined Slow Tourism by studying six destinations and published guidelines on promoting sustainable tourism. Med Pearls created 19 slow tourism products and around 200 unique experiences, immersing travelers in the local traditions and natural beauty of the Mediterranean, supported by the collaboration of partners and Destination Management Companies.
As we celebrate the conclusion of Med Pearls, we reflect on its achievements and thank all contributors for their dedication to sustainable tourism.
